How did you group this band and what was your motives? I wanted to learn how to play guiter for a long time age, but I didn't have the chance. I am curious how you learn guiter by yourself and play it so well.
I found that Mister Green + Highway 9 went to a lot of places and had many exciting live concerts. Which concert gave you the deepest impression? Were there any interesting or fantastic experiences you want to share with us?
What is the most difficult thing you and your band met so far? How did you solve it?
It is a dream for some people to be a singer (vocalist) or to form their own band in the future. Some tries very hard to learn to sing better and some spend a lot of time practicing and practicing musical instruments. What will you say to encourage those people who are dying to make their dreams come true?
Thank you.
Amazing! You’ve made a lot of wonderful music. You are really a talent for music. By the way, I’d like to ask you some following questions.
Have you ever have some quarrels with your band members? What caused the quarrels?
Have you ever made and sung the Chinese music? If not, why don’t you make and sing it? I believe that if you sing the Chinese music, it will still catch our eye.
Please answer my questions. Thanks a million.
wow~ first of all, I'd like to say that your life is so much different from ours. It's so great that you can do your favorate things as your job. I like your songs, and voice, and I am wondering why you choose to come to Taiwan and have a band? I mean, do you think Taiwan is good place for you to find out more inspiration of music, or juct because you like the environment of Taiwan? Besides, I am curious that how come you can creat so many songs without accepting any trainging about that. How did you creat those fantastic music?!
Dear Fanny
I started learning when I was 25. that's quite late, but it proves it's never too late to start learning something. I just kept practicing and learning things from books, and learning to play songs I liked. You could join the NDHU guitar club. I often do activities with them.
The original Highway 9 was different people---the lead guitar player, bass player, and drummer were all local Hualien guys (Taiwanese). The current lineup came later, after I stopped playing with those original musicians.
Dear athenaowl
We have played some interesting and beautiful places, like Jinmen and Penghu. I once played for 200 inmates at Hualien prison---that was unforgettable.
The most difficult thing for our band is that half of us are in Hualien, and the others in Taipei. This means we don't get to practice as often as we'd like.
It is difficult to keep going when one is fighting an uphill battle all the time. The music business is not easy. If you think good thoughts, good things will happen. (That's what my wife says)
Hi Rick
Quarrels with band members are usually about someone being late for practice/sound-check etc. That's the only thing, really.
I don't write Chinese songs because:
1. I'm not Chinese (so it doesn't feel "natural")
2. Many people in Taiwan (and other countries where I play) understand English
3. I don't want to do something just so people will think it's cool/cute, or whatever.
Thanks for the compliments!
Dear sunmoonstar
Thanks for saying such nice things about my music!
I used to perform as a duo, then I performed solo, then I formed a band because I wanted a fuller, bigger sound, and wanted to be loud. I still play solo often, and its more like folk music.
I am really lucky to get to play music and get paid for it. I sometimes wish it could be my full-time job, but this is extremely difficult to accomplish if I only want to play my own music on my own terms (and besides, then I might start to dislike it, anyway).
Taiwan is a good place for music because it is possible to play all over the entire island in the course of a 3-day weekend. Not many countries where this is true.
On the other hand, it's a bad place for me to be because the music industry is not fully developed here, and I am singing original English songs in a Chinese-speaking environment.
I recommend that if people want to write songs they pay attention to global events and travel as much as they can---these things make one think, and provide inspiration.
Finally, I don't think people need training to be a musician. They need to practice and have an open mind.
